145 years, two months, and twelve days since world crash

On some days a formidable crack appears in the sky, like what one would see in old plaster walls, whitewashed in false purity. I never liked that crack. I know no one who likes it. On other days the glass shards next to the oak tree that I never bother to pick up and clean away turn into clear birds, some leaving to perch on my window, tapping crystal to crystal, small noise waking me from my slumber. Those little miracles I don't mind so much, though it is annoying to find my bed having moved from the position it had been in the night before.

They called it the world crash. I wasn't alive. None of us were. Something about reality caving in on itself, something about the world fraying like an old rug. There are only a few stable zones left, and they're walled in, no freaks allowed. That includes me, of course. Post-crash, some kids ended up being born with blue skin, or horns, or leaves on their bodies. Me? I'm lucky. Some find my freakishness beautiful. But enough about that.

Some of us are getting antsy. Not that anything's gotten any more unstable- it's doubtful that anyone will turn into a tree anytime soon. But there's a few people wanting to go into the walled zones. Break things, scare those smug little "normals" and their pretty little organized unchaotic mess. Calling us fractured. Calling us less than human. They go out sometimes, in funny suits and ridiculous cars, to trade with the other walled people. That's when we ambush them. Hella fun.

Peace treaties are for people who don't know any better.

THE SMALL STORY

Premise:

The world "crashed" 145 years ago. Most don't know the cause, but it is speculated that scientists who attempted to alter reality itself had their isolated, boxed experiments grow like vines that created fractures in in the reality of the world. And as one knows, Fractures become larger fractures, which become cracks, which become chasms.

The first thing one would notice in this brave new world is that the sky often has a literal crack above it, one of the more obvious signs of human tampering. There are also smaller blessings and curses, such as trees that grow from the sides of buildings, unaware of gravity, their fruits otherwise unharmed. Sometimes reality shifts, and one's shoes will move from its previous location the night before.

But then there are also the people. Many on the outside "unstable zones" have various oddities, from the minor to the debilitating to the actually useful. Most "powers" one can get are directly related to your affliction; example- a girl who has vines growing out of her skin can similarly grow vines elsewhere, and perhaps even have minor control of how they twist and turn.

There are "stable zones" left, and they were built in a hurry, walled bubbled cities that shield themselves from the outside, where the "afflicted" reside. They are normal- well, as normal as one can get in a world where the sky sometimes has a crack in it.

As of late there as been some discontent. The walled stable zones have difficulty contacting each other, and use heavily armored cars to transport people to other zones. Some do not come back, either due to the unstable world doing its work, or the people of the barren lands terrorizing them.

And a few of the walled zones themselves are slowly decaying into wildness, so to speak, though the mutations happening inside said cities are far worse...

Side A:

You are an afflicted in the unstable zone. You have lived here for all of life, accustomed to the stark, frightening crack in the sky. It does not disconcert you; in fact it is one thing that is "stable" in your life.

Side B:

You are from a stable zone, a terrible "affliction" occurring like a plague- people are slowly turning a marble white, and at the end of three months disintegrate into a fine dust. You have enough money to abandon the place, and are among the few to leave via armored car in hopes of entering another unaffected stable zone.

Your armored car has crashed. You are stranded with a few others, at the mercy of the elements.

Side A:

You're not exactly welcoming. Hate or disinterest or mercy? You decide.

Rules:

1. Don't be rude.

2. No Mary Sues, no power-playing.

3. Do try to keep this PG-13 or under. Sai-ga rules still apply.

4. Don't try to join if you didn't read the descriptions. You'll get lost.

5. Wait for me to approve you.

Name: Li Chau Kim (last-middle-first)
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Appearance: Short and slender, lightly tanned. Has shoulder-length black hair with straight-cut bangs. Takes care in fashion. Wears long gloves with a golden lining. [x]
Affliction: Her touch gradually turns things into gold.
Personality: Kim comes off as a bitch, at first. She's snarky, obsessive, and prideful. However, she doesn't intend any harm; she talks first and thinks later. She bonds well with people she can connect with, and knows how to control herself.
History: Kim has lived luxuriously throughout her life. Her affliction developed late, having temporary effects at the age of five, and full effect at age seven. Her parents showered her with love in return for her ability. Because of the value of her power, her family was in good relations with nearby stable zones. Following a minor accident, her father was left with a patch of gold running down his arm. She stopped using her powers afterwards, bothered by the pain it caused her father.

Name: Lynn Elliot
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Appearance: Short and thin, pale in color. Has long, parted, light brown hair and amber eyes. Dresses simply, wearing muted colors. Looks distant and fragile. Has a soft, delicate [telepathic] voice. [x]
Affliction: A mute; can instead communicate telepathically. Works like a telepathic relay- can receive and send messages.
Personality: Lynn is very closed and gentle, seeming to be without fear. She keeps to herself, usually, but is very willing to help others. She has few friends, so is very loyal to those she makes. She is fond of glass ornaments and sculptures.
History: Lynn's parents died when she was young, killed by their own afflictions. She lives with her siblings, Adam and Laura, though often is alone.

Name: Dis Ahkmet

Gender: Male

Age: 19

Appearance: Dis is averagely tall and on the lean side, body tightly muscled and scarred thanks to his escapades. He sports a distinct Egyptian heritage, but there could be some European descent in there somewhere, apparent through his dark gray eyes. He tends to wear holey jeans and sandals, or worn-out sneakers. He prefers old t-shirts and tank tops, often paired with his patched up and well-loved fatigue jacket. His hair is a mess of braided bits tied with colorful string, threaded with beads and other clinky things. It hangs a little past his shouders and looks like an interesting cross between pirate and punk.

This is Dis.

Affliction (if in unstable zones): He attracts bugs. Insects, arachnids, those things. It's some sort of natural magnetism he's got going, and while he's able to keep them from residing in his clothes all of the time, he has a little flock that tends to follow him around. Dis cannot control them enough to create a swarm and use them for a specific purpose, but he can 'encourage' the little creepers to go in certain directions he wants them to. Sometimes. Other times, they just crawl around and do whatever bugs do. The other thing he's noticed is that the beasties don't attack him in any way, they just sort of reside along with him.

Personality: Dis tends to be a little bit on the wild side. He's the kid that jumps off rooftops just to see if he can make it to the next one and lights himself on fire. In another world he probably would consider a career in being a stuntman, but here life is just life and he's fine with it. He tends to be mostly laid back, if a bit rude and a bit loud, but sobers up when he has to. When he's angry, there are two kinds of temper to watch out for. He could explode and really get nasty- that's usually when he gets into a fistfight and doesn't care what he does, so long as his opponent is crying and twitching when he's done. The other temper is the worse of the two, the one where he nurses a grudge and waits to get back at you.

He does have a gentle side that does like kittens and cute girls, and he likes to make friends. Most folks just reside on the surface of his affections, but if someone manages to get under his skin and into his heart, then he'll do just about anything in his power for them.

History (you may leave this blank if you wish to surprise us): He was born in the unstable areas, like most other folks. His parents were decent people, even if they were brother and sister. That's not something he elaborates on much. His mother died about two years ago, following the death of her fourteen-year-old son, Dis' half-brother. The kid died from a genetic disease that could have been cured, but the costs were too much and the travel too hard for him. And nobody knew if he would be allowed into a stable zone hospital. Dis now lives apart from his father, as family relations were strained by the deaths. The rest of his family is mostly gone, as the afflictions and powers they had eventually meant their end. Dis is alright with that knowledge, but has yet to figure out how his bug collection could kill him.

Name: Himmel Fairholm

Gender: Male

Age: 18

Appearance: Himmel stands at a far from intimidating 5'7 - pale skin, wiry frame, sinewy muscle. He is blond haired, with strands reaching his chin, eyes matching with a similar golden color. One would assume from his smile and countenance that he is relatively easy to talk to, and when one does speak to him, his voice sounds airy and light but altogether friendly. He is fond of the occasional useless accessory when it comes to clothing, though in a whole his clothes do not stand out- why would they need to? His affliction does that for him.

Affliction: Patches of Himmel's skin are mirrored copies of the sky- what looks like clever tattoos of clouds will move around just as one would expect from clouds outside a window. He is free to move the patches around at will to hide them under clothes if need be with concentrated effort, but as of late he no longer bothers unless it is evening and his skin becomes dominated with dark and stars. As for being a creature with clouds on his skin, he can similarly turn into a fine mist and travel some distance in this form- a useful skill in his youth when he wanted to play hide and seek. On a really good day he can also control the temperature of the air around him, but that occurence is not often.

Personality: Contrary to his physical nature, Himmel's personality is firmly held in solid ground: He is practical, saves money, saves food, and does not take stupid risks with his life- though if he ever wished to jump off a building he could easily survive by using his abilities. In terms of friendships he tends to skip formalities and will avoid being associated with someone he dislikes, even if it will benefit him. People he hates are people he hates. People he loves are people he loves. He has one weakness however: the ruins of the old crashed world are his playground, and he often brings home interesting books and other esoterica from these places- while carrying a shotgun for protection. Some people are vultures after all.

History: Himmel lives alone in a small house with a tree in the front that grows a large assortment of fruits and vegetables in its branches. It is a decent living for him to trade the food, especially the rarer fruit, with the local market. He does not like to speak of his parents or his past.

Name: Ro Degracia

Gender: Male

Age: 17

Appearance: All deep tan skin and messy black hair, at a distance and backed by the sun Rio looks mighty impressive. That is, until anyone of average height stands beside him then he just looks kind of short. Rio stands his tallest at 54, though he hardly lets his height get in the way. Hes athletically built, with a good, lean pair of running legs and somewhat muscled arms. Most of the time hes in dark or neutral tones, though he has a penchant for collecting necklaces (especially gold ones) and usually has four or five hanging around his neck. Both his ears have several piercings in them.

Affliction: Rio can harden his skin to metal, though doing it in parts of his body that arent the forearms, hands, or feet take severe concentration. His skin turns a dark silver color when he does this. He can still feel pain while his skin is hard, though not as much as he would if it were normal. At times his hands and arms will have random patches of silver scales on them, a side effect from overuse of his ability.

Personality: Rio is a lot of bark, but hes got quite a bite as well. Hes proud and lives in the present, without consideration of what may come of his actions now. Hes been called arrogant or snobbish, and acts condescendingly toward people he deems lower than him, which is most people on first impression (maybe hes compensating for his height or lack thereof). He tends to regret the stupid things he says/does, though hes too proud to apologize for them properly, and mopes around whenever he feels sorry. Hes got an awfully large soft spot for gold things, though hes got a good enough head on his shoulders to not let himself be bribed with them most of the time.

History: Rio was born and raised in the unstable areas and hails from a respected line of proud afflicted people. He is second in line to inherit the family name (whatever that would mean), but does not really care if he gets it or not. Despite being in good relations with his family, he lives mostly on the hospitality of friends as he dislikes the stuffiness of his home atmosphere.

His name technically has an accent over the I, but I'll probably never write that in. 8D;

Nuklz, approved.

I need more characters, particularly from the stranded car from the safe zones. You're free to play as many characters as you like.
